Friends of Shelton Dog Park Present Award to Local Boy Scout

The Shelton Dog Park sports a great new information kiosk, thanks to Jake Johnson of Boy Scout Troop 27, based in Shelton. As part of his Eagle Scout project, Jake planned, designed, raised funds for and (with a little help from his friends) built the new information kiosk at the park.

“The kiosk is one of the best-designed and built kiosks in Shelton,” said Mandy Oram, “and we are so pleased to have it, as it allows us to post information and news regarding the dog park and dog related issues in a weatherproof and visible location.”

Jake spent several months in the planning stages. He visited various locations in Shelton with existing kiosks to get design ideas. He also consulted with both Ron Herrick, Director of Shelton Parks & Recreation and with The Friends of Shelton Dog Park to get their input on the type and size of kiosk they would like for the park. Jake then designed the kiosk on paper, made a list of all the supplies needed to build it and presented his project to the troop leadership for approval. Once approval was granted, he worked to raise funds and solicit donations of materials from local individuals and businesses. Jake estimates the cost of materials to build the kiosk at over $ 750, all of which was contributed by generous local donors.

Jake’s mom, Amy Johnson, said she is proud of Jake’s efforts on this project. “He had to go out and approach local businesses, present his project and ask for donations. Many responded positively, for which I give him credit.”

Jake handed the keys to the new information kiosk to Mandy Oram of The Friends of Shelton Dog Park in a ceremony at the Dog Park on September 17. In recognition of Jake’s hard work, and in a nod to his Eagle Scout aspirations, the Friends presented Jake with a ‘Beagle Scout’ award in thanks for his outstanding contribution to the Shelton Dog Park.
