The old castle in New Canaan

The Harvard 5 of New Canaan may have the title, but its the castle designed by William Tubby that takes the cake. Let me explain. Most of you  are familiar the Phillip Johnson Glass of New Canaan. That is right, a glass house. This is one of the more unique and interesting houses designed and built in our state, and yes its exterior is completely glass. This house was built and designed by Phillip Johnson. Johnson you see was part of the Harvard 5. The Harvard 5 is a group of architects that graduated from Harvard and settled in New Canaan in the 1940's. Together these 5 alumni  built a plethora of unique houses around town. Some still stand till this day, including the Glass House itself. Well if there was the Harvard 5, there should be the Brooklyn 1. Architect William Tubby, who graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Architecture Institute was the designer and builder of what is called, The Castle. Just to the  north, of off the Merritt Parkway in New Canaan on what is 300 acres of land lays The Castle. The castle is located in what is the town's Waveny Park. In 1912 Lewis Lapham, one of the founders of Texaco hired Tubby to build this architectural marvel for him and his family. The name Waveny, was the name of a river in England where Lapham's Ancestors lived. The castle was and still is a modern marvel and one that every Connecticut Resident should view. The Lapham family has since moved on and the town purchased the castle and the lands around it in 1967. One can now view the castle and it's grounds. The castle is now rented out for weddings and other parties. The grounds in the summer host the Tuesday Night summer cross country track series. The annual town's fireworks are hosted here as well. The Harvard 5 may have set their mark on the town in the 1940's, but its William Tuby who laid the ground work 30 years earlier. Be sure to check out The Castle!!!!
