Thegirls basketball team again looks to clinch a state tournament berth on Friday when the Gaelettes host Sheehan at 5:15 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader between the schools.

Shelton is coming off Wednesday's 68-59 loss to West Haven that dropped them to 7-8. The Gaelettes could not stop West Haven's Jayva Johnson, who erupted for 30 points.

Sheehan dropped a 58-50 decision to Sacred Heart Academy on Wednesday and enters Friday's contest with a 9-5 record.

If Shelton falls again, its next chance to clinch a postseason berth will come on Tuesday when its play at winless Lyman Hall.

The Shelton boys, coming off Monday's 58-50 victory over East Haven, go for their second straight win on Friday when they host Sheehan in the second game of the twinbill (7 p.m.).

The Gaels snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday and improved to 5-9, surpassing their win total from last season (4-16).

Sheehan has dropped three in a row, including Monday's 45-41 setback to Amity, and enters Friday's contest with a 6-9 record.

The deadline for the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship is Monday, Feb. 6.

The scholarship is open to Connecticut high school seniors who aspire to careers in sports journalism. Named for the longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who passed away in 2003, the award provides the winner $1,000 for freshman-year college study and a chance to receive increased aid in succeeding years by meeting certain standards.
