A Fairfield man is being detained in West Haven Tuesday afternoon in connection to a lockdown at the University of New Haven, according to Sergeant Suzanne Lussier.

Fairfield Police are on scene of the individual’s Stratfield Road home after being contacted by the West Haven Police Department that the suspect resides there, according to Chief Gary MacNamara.

The University of New Haven West Haven branch went into lockdown shortly before 1 p.m. for reports of a possible armed man on campus.

The Fairfield man does have a valid pistol permit to carry handguns and has two known and legally registered weapons, according to Lussier.

The university sent out an emergency message on their Twitter account telling students to “shelter in place [all caps] and await further instructions.”

The Tweet stated that the West Haven Police Department was searching for “an Asian male near South Campus with what appears to be a rifle.”

MacNamara said he anticipates West Haven police to arrive and conduct a search of the home.

No further details, including the name of the suspect, were immediately released.
