Obituary: Carl E. Schmid, Age 80

Carl E. Schmid, age 80, beloved husband of Donna DiPronio Schmid of Easton, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012 surrounded by family in St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Born in Norwalk, he was the son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth Horan Schmid.

He grew up in Greens Farms, graduated from Staples High School, Westport, and was a long time resident of Easton.

Carl served in the US Army Signal Corps as part of the Occupational Forces in Salzburg, Austria. He attended the University of Bridgeport and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from New York University and a MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut.

For over 36 years, he was a senior staff engineer for the Perkin-Elmer Corporation. He worked on aerospace and instrument group projects and has seven U.S. patents to his credit. Carl worked on a reconnaissance camera project and designed the Series 200 LC Pump for liquid chromatography that is still used worldwide.

After his retirement, he founded the consulting firm E/M Systems. Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Westport, the Easton Lions Club and the Swiss American Association of Connecticut of which his father was a founding member.

His hobbies included golf, tennis, gardening and welding. Carl designed and built a tractor and an arc welder, among other things.

In addition to his cherished wife Donna of 57 years, survivors include his four loving children, Cara Schmid Mocarski of Huntington, Carl Schmid II of Washington, D.C., Dr. Della Schmid and her spouse, Sue Tharnish of Sandy Hook and Gina Schmid of Marstons Mills, Mass.; a brother, Eugene Schmid (Rose) of Greens Farms and four loving grandchildren, Derek and Ashley Mocarski and Emma and Benjamin Schmid-Tharnish, plus many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
