Life Post Grad: This is Getting Old

Think leaving home for college can be difficult? Try the other way around.

The generation gap is very apparent between parents and young adults these days due to the technological advancements and dependence on the internet. While desperately trying to find a job, I spent hours a day filling out endless applications that are only available online. My father was convinced that because I wasn’t out physically “pounding the pavement” that I was sitting on my computer playing solitaire and minesweeper all day. As I was getting a bad reputation, there he was: moseying around the house, enjoying his permanent vacation, playing minesweeper and solitaire.

After 2 months of searching for jobs to no avail, the opportunity for employment was finally offered. After accepting a full time position in my chosen career path, I was more excited about having a reason to leave my house for 9 hours each day than I was about getting a consistent paycheck.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there are certainly some wonderful perks to this whole “living at home” gig. I have created a list of the pros and cons of my situation for anyone making a similar transition.

Pros:

  • Home cooked meals.
  • Not having to go to the grocery store but somehow always having beverages and food avaliable.
  • Getting your laundry washed, ironed and folded… (okay, maybe I’m spoiled with that one).
  • Not having to pay rent/bills.
  • Having inspiration to create this blog.

Cons:

  • Constant monitoring of the amount of clothes on your bedroom floor.
  • Needing approval to leave your house after 7pm.
  • Having to give 3 days’ notice to reserve the family room couch if you are having visitors.
  • Hearing the same Dean Martin songs and clips every day when your father discovers “youtube.”
  • Receiving text messages if you’re out past 11:30pm inquiring where you are, who you’re with, what you’re doing, and what time you’re coming home… (if the questions don’t get more in-depth than this, consider yourself lucky.)

With the good, comes the bad. Life after graduation is a constant struggle to find a balance. Though, after the summer adjustment, things became interesting as I began working. Oh… And for those of you wondering, this week my father has chosen to whistle the tune ‘Hello, My Baby’ which has proved to be a hit seeing as how my mother has now started humming it as she does the dishes.
