Newtown Requests Halt to Gifts, Says They'll Become 'Sacred Soil'

Officials say it's better to distribute gifts locally, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Since the 12/14 Sandy Hook school shooting, gifts have poured into Newtown from all over the world. In Sandy Hook and on the steps of Edmond Town Hall, piles of candles, teddy bears, letters of well wishing and other memorials have sprouted up.

But now town officials are respectfully requesting a halt to the gifts.

First Selectman Pat Llodra, Police Chief Michael Kehoe and superintendent Janet Robinson are among those who asked for gifts to stop Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Additionally, Llodra told residents in a townwide call Saturday that existing gifts -- including signs and teddy bears -- would be "gathered and processed" into soil to serve as the foundation for a future Sandy Hook memorial, according to the Newtown Bee:

"This will be sacred soil, holding all the sweet messages and symbols of love and hope, of kindness and sadness, visions for a better future, and promises to forever remember the ones lost in this sad attack."

The call added that Newtown's Public Works department will be in charge of the work.

Did anyone from Shelton visit Newtown or leave a gift?

Visited last Sunday with my best friends and brought some home baked cookies to the police station. They were extremely gracious and thankful. Walked around to view the memorials and was moved to tears several times. What struck us the most was how respectful the visitors were. In the middle of such a horrible tragedy, you could see the goodness that is still in the world.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
