Q: Connecticut in the American Civil war is your third book. What research that went into writing it?

A: For this book what I did, I worked with five of my graduate students at Central Connecticut State University, we went out and researched tons of soldiers letters and newspapers from the period at a wide variety of historical societies and libraries throughout the state to put together all of this information.

Q: How long did it take you to complete the book?

The book took about a year and half to do with the help of my graduate students which is actually pretty quick.

Q: You have written three books, which one is your favorite and why?

A: It is hard for me to say which one of my books is my favorite. I really enjoyed writing my first book which was about Andrew Jackson and the first time that Martial law was ever declared in the U.S. but I am really enjoying this book "Connecticut in the American Civil War" simply because there are so many people who are interested in the topic of the civil war and a lot of people are interested in Connecticut history as well and to be able to write something that brings two of these things together and allows people to really take a look at their own communities and engage that topic is really a lot of fun .

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing or teaching?

In terms of what I like to do when I am not researching, writing and teaching, I have three daughters and I love to go hiking with them and gardening and spending time with my family.

Q: Last question...one word that describes you!

One word that describes me, well I will tell you a word that other people tell me all the time: Passionate. I am very passionate about what I do. I really do enjoy it because I think we have to learn our history to better understand how it is we got to where we are today. I truly believe that.
