"Sing" Breaks Out This Weekend

Area teens will take their place in the spotlight as Center Stage Theatre presents its annual Teen Musical Theatre Workshop.

The production, "Sing," is a musical review, featuring high powered songs from Broadway musicals like "Mamma Mia," "Pippin," "Matilda," and "Thoroughly Modern Millie."

"A cast of 50 talented students from Shelton High School, Derby High School, Amity High School, Oxford High School, Woodland High School, St. Joseph High School, Sacred Heart Academy, and North Haven High School have been rehearsing for the last ten weeks, under the direction of directors Gina and Mia Scarpa," according to Center Stage.

Assisting on the production with choreography and other production duties are alumni of the Teen Musical Theatre Workshop program: Justin Zenchuk, Katie Sedlock, and Casey Blohm.

"Our Teen Musical Theatre Workshop is one of the highlights of our year," said Artistic Director Gary Scarpa. "It is an evening of great entertainment, presented by a super-talented cast of kids eight different high schools. It's a chance to see teens at their very best!"

The Teen Musical Theatre Workshop has been presented at Center Stage since the theatre was founded in 2005 by directors Gary and Francesca Scarpa.

The theatre's mission is to enhance the cultural environment within its community; to present high quality theatrical productions at affordable prices; to encourage growth and education through the performing arts; and to provide a means for interested adults, teens and children to experience and participate in various aspects of live theater.

"No activity exemplifies our mission better than the Teen Musical Theatre Workshop," said Francesca Scarpa. "Our daughters and their directing team create an environment where the kids grow not only as performers but also as people. And the result is an amazing show that we all take pride in!"

The production will be performed at 8 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2, 8, 9 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 3. Center Stage is located at 54 Grove Street in Shelton. Tickets are $15 and may be obtained by calling 203-225-6079 or by visiting http://www.centerstageshelton.com/.
