Shelton Sports Roundup: Feb. 13

With Mark Failla, Sean Kallett and Ed Hunt all winning titles in their weight classes, finished third Sunday in the SCC wrestling championships at Daniel Hand High School in Madison.

Xavier won the team title with 203.5 points, followed by Hand (192), Shelton (94.5), Foran (73), Fairfield Prep (63.5), Guilford (61.0), Amity (47.0), Branford (38.0), Law (33.5), Cheshire (26.0), Notre Dame of West Haven (16.0), East Haven (15.0), Career (14.0) and Sheehan (13.0).

In the 106-pound weight class, Failla decisioned Hand's Jonah Lewis, 8-2. At 126 pounds, Kellet decisioned Foran's C.J. Luth, 8-3. And at 132 pounds, Hunt pinned Hand's Justin Elias 1:47 into their finals bout.

Hunt, who improved to 31-3 this season, won his third straight SCC title while Kellet captured his second consecutive league crown.

Now with 135 career win, he ranks second of Shelton's all-time behind Pat Gillen, who graduated last year after setting the state record with 204 career victories. Gillen is now a freshman at the University of Virginia.

Failla, who was third last year in the 103-pound class, earned his first SCC championship.

The three Shelton wrestlers now advance to the Class LL championships next weekend at Trumbull High. The seedings will be announced on Tuesday.

The Shelton boys basketball team inched closer to the state tournament Friday with a 55-29 victory over Guilford.

Christian Pierre scored 17 points for the Gaels, who improved to 7-10 and need to win only one of their three renaiming games to secure a postseason berth.

David Moreland scored 12 points and Kyle Packnick chippd in with seven for Shelton, which was in control from the start.

The Gaels surrendered only two points in the first period in building a 15-2 advantage.  The Gaels then held a 25-10 lead at halftime.

After outscoring the Indians 17-6 in the third period, the Gaels took a commanding 42-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

JP Barrett led Guilford (4-13) with just six points.

The Shelton girls basketball suffered its fifth straight loss Saturday with a 42-29 defeat to Amity.

Kelsey Pendagast and Alyssa Eannotti each scored eight points for the Gaelettes, who dropped to 7-12 and need to win Monday's regular-season finale at Hamden (7 p.m.) make the state tournament.

Shelton held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but managed just 17 points over the final three periods.

Chloe Brinton scored 10 points to lead Amity, which improved to 11-8.
