CT State Police Urge Caution as Winter Storm Approaches

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday for lower Fairfield County, with sleet and freezing rain to follow up to eight inches of snow this weekend.

Connecticut State Police are urging caution for motorists planning to travel this weekend, as part of the state faces a Winter Storm Watch with sleet and freezing rain to follow up to eight inches of snow.

The National Weather Service storm watch, effective for lower Fairfield County, will start at 6 a.m. Saturday and continue through 6 a.m. Sunday.

“A winter storm watch means there is a potential for signficant snow, sleet or ice accumulation that may impact travel,” the NWS says.

State police are bracing for the weather by deploying emergency vehicles to handle emergencies, according to a press release issued by the agency.

“Sufficient Troopers will be in place on patrol on roads and highways, with any additional required Troopers on call for immediate response,” according to the release, issued by Lt. J. Paul Vance.

It’s a good idea to stay off the roads.

A “storm-ready” vehicle will include proper tires and wipers as well as adequate gas, police say.

“If you must travel during the storm, provide your route of travel details to a family member or friend,” police say. “Motorists are encouraged to check media reports prior to traveling to gather the latest updates on road conditions and possible closures.”

Additionally, motorists are encouraged to use headlights and keep a charged cell phone, clothes, water and non-perishables in their vehicles, as well as flares, a shovel and blankets.

“During a snow event, reducing speed and expanding distances between cars is an absolute necessity for safe driving,” police say. “If you become stranded in your vehicle in winter weather, stay with your vehicle and do not try to walk to safety. Call 911 from your cell phone for help. Run the motor for about 10 minutes each hour for heat. Open a window slightly for fresh air and make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked.”
