The pigs are flying in Sharon Connecticut!!!

Have you ever heard of the term, “When Pigs Fly?" If you are not familiar with it, the term represents
something that will probably never happen. Most of you, especially in the southern part of the state,
probably decided a while ago that there is no reason to go to Sharon. Well let me be the first to tell you
that that the pigs are flying there. Formed in 1739, the town of Sharon gets its name
from the northern half of the coastal plain of Israel. The plain itself is even mention in the Bible. All
religious views aside, there is nothing plain about this Litchfield County Town. The town's history is one
of industry, as for over 200 hundred year centered on the manufacturing of iron. Munitions where also
manufactured here during the Civil War by the Hotchkiss Company .Those days have passed as Sharon
has evolved into bedroom community for its neighboring New York City. Many a famous people have
even decided to settle down and live in Sharon. For starters both Kevin Bacon and Michael Fox reside
in Sharon. The town has a diversified selection of things to do for its residents and an abundance of
entertainment for its visitors. For 28 years, the town has hosted its annual Sharon Classic 5 Mile Road
Race. This race’s route provides the runners with the gorgeous views of Sharon's Rolling Hills and
estates. In the summer, many visitors camp at Housatonic Meadows State Park located right on the
Housatonic River. l have driven by this abode many times and seen multiple tents set up under the tall pines
on the bank of the River itself. I am certain the locals take advantage of their Mudge Pond
Town Beach. There is a pavilion here, picnic tables, playground and of course a beach. That's right,
Sharon has a beach. Who would have thunk? Then there is the Sharon Tri-Arts Playhouse which started
as play reading group in the 1920's. The playhouse is located in its famous red barn and has become a
nostalgic venue, complete with a very nice outdoor patio. The shows on tap this year are Tuesdays with
Morrie and Les Miserables. The Sharon Audubon Center comes complete with 1,147 acres, 11 miles of
trails and 2 ponds. The center even has hands on Natural History Museum. For classic southern style
food such as barbequed meats and pulled pork, then Sharon is also the place for you. In what is called,
When Pigs Fly Southern BBQ, patrons can enjoy some of the best southern food in Connecticut. Go figure. And you thought that pigs would never fly. Well they sure are flying in Sharon and so are the good times!
