March Madness: What NCAA Players Can Teach You About Study Skills

What do NCAA basketball players and successful students have in common? Plenty!

Did you know you can learn study skills from NCAA March Madness players?

Yes, it’s true. NCAA basketball players apply all the same skills on the courts as successful students.

To prepare for a game, pros practice with their teammates, discuss plays with their peers and coaches, and organize timeouts to talk about the other team’s style of play. If the other team is running an unfamiliar zone defense, they are going to listen to their coach, practice, and work hard to figure out a way to beat it.

To prepare for a test or paper, successful students review their notes, write drafts, bounce ideas off of peers, and arrange to meet with their teachers before or after class to clarify a confusing point or to make sure they are on track. If they are challenged by a concept, they work hard to understand it.

Most importantly, every great basketball player knows that every point counts. Just ask Kemba Walker, whose single point at the end of the game in 2011 was the point that won the team championship for UConn. That’s a point that was worth the extra effort!
