Keeping Up With Classes During an Unexpected School Absence

Going to be out of school for an extended period of time? Here's how to keep up.

An unexpected or extended school absence can derail your whole semester, or even your whole school year, unless you take immediate steps to keep up with your classes and your schoolwork. Thanks to technology, options to manage distance learning are greater than ever.

Your school’s intranet could be the key to keeping up. Many schools have an intranet system which allows students, parents, and teachers to communicate directly via a closed network. Intranets vary; some schools have an internal email or web-conferencing system that will allow your teacher to speak to directly to you, send homework assignments, and check on your progress. In some districts, students can virtually attend classes from a remote location.  The virtual learning options include live, on-demand or recorded classes. In a live online classroom, the student is online with a computer and camera, and there is a camera set up in the classroom so the student can see and hear the teacher deliver the lesson, see the classroom, and sometimes even see other students: the student can participate live in all classes in real time. With on-demand or recorded classes, students can listen to or watch classes at a convenient time: the classes have been recorded by the school and are available for the student to download or stream.

However you keep up, make sure you understand and comply with your school’s policy for absences. The circumstances and length of your absence may change. In some school systems, a student will be automatically withdrawn from school enrollment after a certain period of time. Work with your school to put together an action plan will help to ensure that when you are ready and able to return to school, you can pick right up again where you left off.
