Shelton Sports Roundup: Feb 22

It may not have been much of a reward but by virtue of its 44-41 win over West Haven on Monday, the Shelton High School earned the 14th and final seed in the SCC tournament.

The Gaels will play at Career in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday. Career is the third seed behind Hillhouse and Fairfield Prep following Monday 47-46 loss to the Academics at the buzzer.

Hillhouse, which completed a 20-0 regular season, is the defending SCC champion.

For all the Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team has been through this season, the Wreckers still have a chance to get back to the state tournament.

The Wreckers, who have been decimated by injuries this season, snapped a 10-game losing streak on Monday with a 6-0 victory over East Catholic.

Staples improved to 7-11 and needs to win one of its final two games to secure a berth in the Division III state tournament. Last season, the Wreckers reached the state final losing to Watertown-Pomperaug 4-0 in the finals.

Staples hosts Greenwich (3-16) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

If the Wreckers don't beat the Cardinals, they will get another chance on Saturday when the host Cheshire, which blanked Fairfield 2-0 on Monday.
