Shelton's Kyle Packnick and Angela Ferro are among 11 honorees who have been named SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for October.

Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average while demonstrating leadership qualities such as: being a positive role model; helping teammates overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; or putting the needs of the team before themselves.

Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.

A three-sport captain (cross country, basketball and tennis), Packnick has been a leader in the classroom as well at Shelton.   An advanced CAPT Scholar, Kyle ranks 19th in a class of 433 students and sports an outstanding 96.6 grade point average.

A member of the National and Spanish honor societies, he was a Boys State participant and serves as Vice President of the Student Council.   Active in many school and community volunteer endeavors, Pacjknick also is a member of the school’s newspaper, Gael Winds.

Shelton cross country coach Mike Gambardella said, “I am amazed on how well Kyle is able to handle all his activities at such a high level.  He is well rounded in athletics, academics and in the community.”

The captain of the Gaels’ soccer and lacrosse teams, Ferro has been an outstanding student in the classroom.  Ranked third in a class of 433 students, Angela sports a perfect 100 grade point average.

An Advanced CAPT Scholar, she is an AP Scholar and member of the National and Spanish honor societies.  She is a recipient of the Yale Book Award and serves as sports editor of the school’s newspaper, Gael Winds.  On the soccer field, Ferro has been on the SCC’s top players – earning All-Housatonic Division and All-Area accolades.

Shelton girls soccer coach Marvin Miller said, “Angie Ferro is that rare student-athlete that equally excels both in the classroom and on the field.  Her leadership and on-field achievements are key contributors to her ongoing commitment to excellence in everything she does.”

One of the state's most storied high school football rivalries will be renewed on Thanksgiving morning when Shelton and Derby clash for the 101st time at Derby's DeFilippo Field (10:30 a.m.)

Recently, the series has been onesided in Shelton's favor as the Gaels have won eight straight and 11 of the last 12 to take a 50-43-7 lead over the Red Raiders.

Last year, the teams met at Shelton's Finn Stadium in the historic 100th clash between the ancient Naugatuck Valley combantants. Frank Camerino and Ryan DeAngelis combined for 317 yards rushing to lead the Gaels to a 38-14 victory.

With Derby's move to the Naugatuck Valley League and the program falling on some rough times recently, they had been some rumors leading up to last year's contest that it would be the last meeting in the series. There also had been some talk that the NVL wanted Derby to play a 10-game conference slate, but fortunately those rumors did not come to fruition.

Derby, which has won two in a row, is hoping for its second straight .500 season, although the Red Raiders have not had a winning campaign since 1996. They haven't beaten the Gaels since 2002.

Shelton, which has won three straight since a 27-0 setback to top-ranked Xavier, is looking to put the finishing touches on an 8-2 season. The Gaels are still in contention for a Class LL state playoff berth but likely need Ridgefield (also 7-2) to lose to Danbury on Wednesday.

Shelton is tied with Pomperaug for eighth in the Class LL rankings, but Ridgefield appears to have a more favorable schedule regarding the bonus points available.

Senior quarterback Raymond Kreiger has been effective for the Red Raiders, throwing for 2,494 yards, a mark that leads the NVL and ranks fourth in the state.

Derby has shown an ability to score points, averaging 35 per game. The problem is, the Red Raiders surrender 33 per game.

Shelton has not been nearly as affective through the air, using three quarterbacks this season, but Camerino has stabilized the offense since taking over under center and needs just three yards to reach 1,000 for the season on the ground.

Connor O'Brien also is a running threat for the Gaels with 425 yards. Shelton averages more than 200 rushing yards per game, so this contest shapes up as a classic contrast in styles - the Red Raiders' passing attack against the Gaels' ground-and-pound approach.

Shelton-Derby is the state's third-oldest rivalry, trailing only Norwich Free Academy-New London (which is the oldest high school football rivalry in the United States dating to 1875) and Ansonia-Naugatuck.
