Shelton Scores and Standings, Nov 2

The Shelton girls soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Connecticut Conference playoffs with a 4-2 victory over No. 7 seed Mercy on Tuesday night.

Megan Burke, Megan Manzo, Stephanie Vahos and Olivia Mavilla, scored for No. 2 seed Shelton, which improved to 13-1-3. The Gaelettes outshot the Tigers, 13-3. 

In the semifinals, Shelton, which is the reigning SCC and CIAC Class LL state champions, will host either No. 3 seed Amity or No. 6 West Haven. Their quarterfinal will be played on Wednesday.

The other two quarterfinals were completed on Saturday before the snow storm forced several days of postponements.

In those games, top seed Sacred Heart Academy defeated No. 8 North Haven, 3-0, and No. 5 Cheshire blanked Guilford, 1-0.

The semifinals are set for Thursday at the sites of the higer seeds. Sacred Heart Academy will host Cheshire in one semifinal. The final is slated for Saturday at East Haven at 12:30 p.m.

Shelton also advanced in the girls volleyball playoffs, posting a 25-18, 25-13, 25-22 quarterfinal win over No. 6 seed Sacred Heart Academy.

Katie Direnzo had seven kills and 13 digs and Ariel Toth added 12 kills and 10 digs for No. 3 seed Shelton, which improved to 16-3 and will face either Amity and No. 2 seed Guilford in the semifinals on Thursday at the higher seed.

The Spartans and Indians will play their quarterfinal on Wednesday at Guilford.

The CIAC has announced that the state Open cross country meet, scheduled for Friday at Manchester's Wickham Park, has been postponed until next Tuesday.

The site of the meet also has been changed as the girls and boys races now will be take place at at Hammonasset State Park in Madison. The boys will start at 1:45 p.m., followed by the girls at 2:30 p.m.

Darien won the Class L boys championship on Saturday at Wickham Park, which is unavailable for the state Open because of damage it suffered in Saturday's snowstorm.

The Open competition will determine which runners qualify for the  New England championships Nov. 12 at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, R.I.
