Shelton Scores and Standings: July 21

The last time Shelton National played in the sectionals in 2008, it made it all the way to Williamsport for the Little League World Series.

Shelton National opens play in the section one tournament on Thursday in Orange against district one champion North Stamford after having a bye on Wednesday.

The tournament opened Wednesday with North Stamford edging Berlin 6-5 and Fairfield rallying for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to stun East Haven, 10-7.

Eddie Schwartz tied the game for Fairfield American with a two-run homer and Jack Oricoli won it with a three-run blast.

Pool play continues for Shelton National on Saturday (district five, Berlin), Sunday (district four, East Haven) and next Monday (district two, Fairfield American).

The two top teams in the standings meeet for te sectional championship game on July 27. The winner advances to the state championship, which is a two-out-of-three series against the sectional two winner.

The winner of that series moves on to the Eastern Regionals, which begin Aug. 5 in Bristol.

Last year, Fairfield American became the 17th team from Connecticut to represent the state in Williamsport.

Five young swimmers from Shelton, ranging in age from 15 to 18, will participate in the 24th annual Swim Across the Sound Marathon on Aug. 6.  

The Shelton team is led by returning swimmer and captain, Matthew Hellauer, James Szabo, youngest member Cole Chavez, Timothy Maloney and Kaitlyn Siriano, who has a personal investment as her boyfriend's mom battled Stage 3 cancer and survived. She has been cancer free for five years.

These Shelton teens have swum together competitively for years, both for Shelton High School and the Shelton Monroe Rapids Swim team.

They join a field of over 250 swimmers for a 15.5 mile journey across the Long Island Sound from Port Jefferson, N.Y. to Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport.

The festivities at Captain’s Cove Seaport are open to the public.The fastest swimmers are expected to cross the finish line at approximately 2:30 p.m..

St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound is a charitable, grassroots organization run by the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation of Bridgeport.

Since 1987, the SWIM has provided cancer education, screening and prevention programs at low or no cost for the uninsured and underinsured.

In addition, the SWIM helps individual cancer patients on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, such as the funding of wigs and prostheses, medication assistance, free transportation to treatments and appointments, day-care scholarships, support groups and more.

The charity raises funds through events such as the SWIM Marathon, Breast Cancer Luncheon, Walk/Run for Cancer and Prostate Cancer Celebrity Dinner.
