Joe Della Vecchia and Tyler Matakevich, who played on two state championship teams at St. Joseph, each turned in dominating performances one final time before they go their separate ways in the fall.

Della Vecchia passed for four touchdowns and more than 300 yards Saturday as the Fairfield County All-Stars defeated New Haven County 34-14 in the 15th annual Hall of Fame Classic at Ken Strong Stadium.

Matakevich scored three touchdowns for Fairfield Country, which snapped a two-game losing streak and cut NewHaven's lead in the series to 10-5.

Six St. Joseph players were on the roster for the Fairfield County team, which was coached for St. Joseph's Joe Della Vecchia, the father of the quarterback.

The younger Della Vecchia, who is headed to Stonehill College, was named the offensive MVP for Fairfield County while Matakevich, who will enroll at Milford Academy, was Fairfield's defensive MVP.

Shelton linebacker Cody Kitson was named the defensive MVP for New Haven County.

New Haven grabbed a 7-0 lead on Tucker Schumitz's 32-yard pass to Sean Goldrich in the first quarter, but Fairfield scored the next four touchdowns with Della Vecchia and Matakevich hooking up three times for scores.

Matakevich had scoring catches of 20 and 22 yards in the first half, sandwiched around Della Vecchia's 46-yard TD strike to Trumbull's Phil Terio.

Matakevich's second score pushed Fairfield County's lead to 27-7 in the third quarter. New Haven cut the deficit to 27-14 on Schumitz's 20-yard TD pass to Kosy Broderick, but Fairfield County capped the scoring on a 1-yard TD plunge by Fairfield Warde's Alex Delaney in the fourth period

-- Shelton National advanced to the winner's bracket final in the District Three 12-year-old Little League tournament on Thursday with a 9-3 victory over Seymour.

It will play Peter J. Foley Little League on Monday at Sunnyside 1 at 5:45 p.m. PJF advanced with an 8-6 win over Prospect.  

In 11-year-old baseball, Shelton National advanced to the final with a 12-8 win over Seymour on Sunday.

It will play in the final on Thursday (Casa Grande, 5:45 p.m.)  against either Shelton American or Seymour, who meet in the loser's bracket final on Tuesday (Union City, 5:45 p.m.).

Shelton American stayed alive Sunday with a 14-5 win over Union City

In 10-year-old softball, Seymour defeated Shelton in the final 3-2 on Sunday.
