Matthew Hellauer won two events as the Shelton boys swimming team posted a 95-90 victory at Sheehan on Wednesday.

The Gaels opened the meet by securing first and third place in the medley relay.

After the Titans tied the meet at 23-23, Hellauer won the 50 free, backed up by Cole Chavez and Eddie Groth, who finished third and fifth, respectively.

Shelton's Joey Stein then set a school record in the diving with a point total of 264.40.

After losses in the 100 fly and 100 freestyle, Hellauer won the 500 freestyle with Ryan Berman finishing second.

With the Gaels down 63-62, the relay team of Joe Stein, Nick Shigo, Cole Chavez, and Eddie Groth gave Shelton a victory in 200 free relay.

Tim Maloney and Justin Letendre then finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Groth and Berman followed with second- and third-place finishes in the breast stroke.

Shelton clinched the victory by placing second and third in the final relay.

Shelton's Luke Matarazzo, a sophomore at Bates College, is this week's men's basketball player of the week for the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Matarazzo helped the Bobcats (10-6, 4-2 NESCAC) extend their win streak to four games, all against NESCAC opponents, by averaging 22.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Bates’ 2-0 weekend in Connecticut. He shot 14-for-24 (.583) from the field and 13-for-14 (.929) from the free-throw line.

In last Friday night’s 84-80 overtime win at Connecticut College, Matarazzo exploded for a career-high 27 points, including a 6-for-6 effort at the line in the overtime period. The following afternoon at Wesleyan, Matarazzo scored 17 points, matching the previous career-high total he had set just seven days earlier in Bates’ win over Bowdoin.

In the past three games, the 5-foot-9 point guard has raised his scoring average from 5.7 to 8.4 points per game. He currently ranks fourth in the conference in assists per game (4.38), 11th in steals per game (1.31) and 15th in three-point field goal percentage (.381). In NESCAC play, Matarazzo now averages 12.2 points per game, 15th best in the conference.

Matarazzo is the Bobcats’ first NESCAC Player of the Week since Nov. 29, 2010, when Brian Ellis ’11 earned the honor.
