finished first in the Co-ed division Saturday at the Southern Connecticut Conference cheerleading competition. The Gaels had 79 points.

In the all-girls division, Cheshire (75) was first, followed Hand (71) and Sacred Heart Academy (69).

Other scores: East Haven (67.5), Mercy (62.5), Branford (62), Foran (61.5), West Haven (59), North Haven (58), Hamden (55.5), Hillhouse (55), Sheehan (46.5)

Special recognition goes to teams from Career Magnet, Wilbur Cross, Branford, Branford Unified, North Haven and West Haven who participated in the Exhibition Division.

Branford United won the spirit award.

The Shelton boys finished sixth at the SCC indoor track championships with 24 points on Friday while the Shelton girls placed 12th with 18 points.

Shelton's Anthony Geovose won the 300-meter dash with a time of 37.33), beating out Amity's Sean Beaulieu (38.21) and Fairfield Prep's Adam Vare (38.65).

For the Shelton girls, Jessice DeFelice finished second in the high jump with a leap of four feet, 10 inches and Sydney Spadinger placed third in the 1,000-meter run (3:09.54)

Shelton's team of Joelle Schumacher, Emma Floberg, Casey Douglas, Kathleen O'Brien, Selina Jose and Kelly Messemer finished third in the 4x800 meter relay (10:27.6).

For the second straight game, the Shelton girls basketball team missed a chance to clinch a state tournament  berth as the Gaelettes fell to Sheehan 47-44 in overtime on Friday.

Sheehan improved to 10-6 while Shelton dropped to 7-9.

Jessica Wilm scored 10 points to lead the Gaelettes while Kelsey Pendagast and Lauren McCone each addd nine for Shelton.

Sam Smith scored points and Olivia Collette added 10 for Sheehan.

Shelton squandered a 30-20 halftime lead, then was outscored 3-0 in the overtime period.

The Shelton boys basketball team improved its state tournament hopes with a 53-50 victory over Sheehan on Friday.

David Moreland scored 19 points and Christian Pierre added 15 for the Gaels, who improved to 6-9. Shelton needs to win two of its final three games to secure a postseason berth. 

Kyle Packnick also hit double figures for Shelton with 13 points. 

The Gaels trailed 23-17 at the half, but outscored Sheehan 16-6 in the third period to take a 33-29 lead into the final quarter.

Justin McDonald scored 13 points and Sean Brennan added 11 for Sheehan, which dropped to 6-9.

The injury-depleted Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team suffered a 10-1 loss to Trinity Catholic on Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Wreckers, who dropped to 6-7. And it doesn't get any easy as S-W-S plays at New Canaan on Wednesday
