Danica Foglio, who helped lead Shelton to its first girls soccer state championship last fall, is a freshman on the Central Connecticut women's team.

The Blue Devils opened their season with a 0-0 tie against Army on Friday. Sunday's game against Connecticut was cancelled because of Hurricane Irene.

Alexandra Farley, another key member of last year's Shelton team, is beginning her career at Monmouth. The Hawks opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Seton Hall.

The Shelton football team will be tested in the preseason as two of its three scrimmages are against reigning state champions.

The first is on Wednesday, when the Gaels host reigning Class L state champion Masuk and UConn-bound quarterback Casey Cochran at 6 p.m. at Finn Stadium. Masuk was voted the No. 1 team in the state last season.

Next up is a battle against two-time Class S state champion St. Joseph in Trumbull on Saturday at 10 p.m.

Shelton concludes its preseason slate on Sept 8. at home against Valley rival Ansonia.

The Gaels open the regular season on Sept. 16 at Wilbur Cross at 4 p.m.
