Shelton's Jason Foster tossed 7 2/3 innings as Fedell's Mechanics defeated American Steakhouse 3-2 Sunday in the finals of the NABF Northeast Regionals Sunday evening at Quigley Stadium.

With the win, Fedell's, which plays out of the Senior City City in Bridgeport, qualified for the NABF World Series beginning Thursday in Louisville.

Foster, who won Fedell’s first and final game in the tournament, was named Most Valuable Pitcher.

Foster allowed two runs and scattered 10 hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. He won Fedell's first and last games in the tournament and was the Most Valuable Player.

Foster, 22 pitched in the spring at Central Connecticut State University.

Ryan Cimino, 31, who played collegiately at Southern Connecticut, had a two-run double in the third when Fedell's scored all its runs.

Fedell’s, which was making its seventh appearance in the regionals, advanced to the World Series for the first time.

Fedell's begins pool play on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. against the Purdue  Chicks from Maryland. On Friday, it plays the Beecher Muskies, who are the defending World Series champions from Illinois.

Fedells, which went 5-1 in the regional, boasts an overall record of 28-10.

The Yale-New Haven Open is set for Aug. 21-27 at the Yale University courts in New Haven. The tournament features 32 players in the main singles draw and 16 players in the main double draws. Qualifying takes place on Aug. 19 and 20.

Grand Slam champions Francesca Schiavone (World No. 8) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (World No. 12) will join current World No. 1 and three-time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in the tournament. The WTA events is part of the Olympus US Open Series.

Wozniacki who has never lost in New Haven; winning all three times she entered the tournament. Each year she has entered the New Haven Open she has climbed the rankings – in 2008 she entered at No. 30 in the world, in 2009 at No. 9, 2010 at No. 2, and now in 2011 at the top spot.

Wozniacki’s title last year in New Haven catapulted her into the semifinals of the US Open, and her strong play in the fall winning Tokyo and Beijing made her the 20th woman in history to reach the World No. 1 ranking.

She won a Tour-leading six titles in 2010, and has continued her winning ways this year capturing five crowns at Dubai, Indian Wells,Charleston, Brussels and Copenhagen while also reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. This year she has the opportunity to tie Venus Williams’ four consecutive wins at the New Haven Open at Yale (1999-2002).

Joining these three are other top stars Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (World No. 13), Agnieszka Radwanska (World No. 14), Flavia Pennetta (World No. 21), Daniela Hantuchova (World No. 22), Roberta Vinci (World No. 23) and Maria Kirilenko (World No. 25).

The second annual Sunset Run For The Warriors is set for Aug. 28 at the Huntington Green in Shelton beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Registration has begun for the event, which will include one-mile and 10-K races. The registration fee is $30, with discounts offered to veterans, college students and children under the age of 18.

The Sunset Run is dedicated to the men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and the families of the fallen.

All proceeds from the race benefit wounded warriors and their
families through Hope For The Warriors programs. Monies raised will assist with both immediate and future needs.

BRALEY, RIDDLE POWER DOWNTOWN DANNY O’S PAST R & C -- Carrie Braley had three hits and four RBI and winning pitcher Kathy Riddle had three hits to lead Downtown Danny O’s to a 10-6 win over R & C Autobody in a Shelton Women’s softball league tilt last Wednesday at Long Hill School field.

Stacey Cadrin and Karen Bucci added three hits while shortstop Catherine Mills shined in the field for the Downtowners, who evened their record at 2-2. R & C dropped to 2-3.

PORKY’S IMPROVES TO 5-0: Powerhouse Porky’s Café remained unbeaten with a pair of wins last week against Mario’s and Downtown Danny O’s.

Judi Connors and Kelley Garofalo had three hits apiece to lead Porky’s to a 13-5 win Monday against Downtown Danny O’s. Jackie Miller had two hits and played solid defense at first base while Janna Beames was outstanding defensively in right field.

In Porky’s 4-2 win against Mario’s Monday night, winning pitcher Amy Petryshyn had a two-run double while Garofalo had four hits from her leadoff spot in the batting order. Connors also came up big once again with a two-run single with the bases loaded.

R & C AUTOBODY OUTSLUGS DANNY O’S: Meg Mendence had two triples and Wendy Kudek had two doubles as R & C routed Danny O’s 17-2 Monday.

Erica Daum also came up big offensively while Lisa Pane was the winning pitcher for R & C.
