Shelton Schools Win Healthy Food Challenge

Shelton schools have won $500 each and bronze medals from Michelle Obama's Healthier U.S. School challenge.

Linda Stanisci, general manager of the Shelton School Lunch Program, said the award is "achieved by only six percent of nation's schools."

According the program's Website, schools were judged based on the nutritional value of the food served.

For example, the breakfast criteria for the bronze level:

  • At least three different fruits* must be offered each week on three different days.
  • Dried fruit must have no added sweetener; canned fruit must be packed in juice or light syrup.
  • 100% juice can be counted as a fruit only once per week.
  • At least one fruit per week must be served fresh.
