No romance in Connecticut!
Steve A May 13, 2011 at 05:58 PM
She didn;t tell her side and RAN AWAY like a coward bully because she knows she DOESN'T HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON regards to her actions. Which by way not only affected Mr Tate but THREE other students as well. His two friends and the girl that wanted to go to prom with him. If the other two young men had dates, well then she effectly NEGITIVELY affected the prom for SIX students. All over sign asking for a prom date being hung up at the school! What a complete utter loser
Steve A May 13, 2011 at 06:08 PM
Something that people seem to be overlooking in all this is another fact. Besides Mr Tate, this piece of trash has ruined the prom for not only him but his two friends who also will not be going and the young lady that wanted to go to prom with him. That is a total of four students she has ruined the prom for. And if the other two young men had dates, then she has ruined the prom for a total of six students. All over a sign being hung up on the school. Complete loser.

"He broke the rule." Can you tell me, specifically, which one? "But all the "adults" are not acting mature themselves" Questioning and opposing is NOT immature. It's what thinking people do. I think Dr. Smith has room for you in her gulag...

Plenty of romance in CT...just not in Smith's heart!

POSTS HERE ARE PRETTY UNANIMOUS. DR. BETH SMITH SHOULD BE A MARINE DRILL INSTRUCTOR RATHER THAN AN EDUCATOR. THE ONLY THING SHE IS TEACHING KIDS TO MODEL WITH HER ACTIONS HERE ARE TO BE MINDLESS RULE FOLLOWERS WITHOUT AN ABILITY TO MAKE DISTINCTIONS. PERSONALLY I THINK SHE LOOKS A LITTLE SCARY! MORE LIKE A GESTAPO SS OFFICER WITH HER ANAL RETENTIVE HENCHMAN STANDING AT ATTENTION BEHIND HER.

Dr Beth Smith: I will be your date to the prom if you let James go!! Sincerely, K~

You are very brave my friend...and selfless!!!

Dr. Beth Smith lost the common sense value behind a Phd. title. James was punished with an suspension and now because of an April 1st addendum, he is unable to attend prom. James should have posted the message earlier to avoid losing the privilege of attending the prom. Looks like this Headmaster's plan was hastily decided. I understand it was effective April 1st...April Fool's Day, probably to reflect back to Dr. Smith's wise decisionmaking attributes. Being in my 31st year of teaching I'm glad I don't have to deal with her as an administrator.

Please , MYOPINION, nobody wants to hear you defending the evil, that's what the kiss up do. Be brave and stand up to defent the real one oppresed here, the students. I'm agree with the guy that wants to move the prom. Move it big time!! And also a suggestion , invite everybody here defending your case, you will pass from "Zero" to HERO. Invite the Ophra show, probbably she wiill even pay the Whole thing for you guys. Invite the News, the yahoo internet, You tube people. Show that we are all fed up with this bullying power. And ask them to cooperate $ too. This will be a huge event that can also will be the fisrt step to governor do something to protec students from bullying teachers. A little big discipline it's OK, the nonsense , is out of question. From now on every body, who write in this comments , please let James knows, how much they will be able to afford $, to move this party. I'm living in Puerto Rico now, and I don't even drink or dance, but I wiil give something myself even if I don't go. James, please let every body knows if you are serious about this. So we move quick.

School administrators like Dr Beth just looooove zero tolerance policies. It means they won't need to apply anything more than zero intelligence to implement.
David Kiley May 13, 2011 at 10:58 PM
With all the kids driving drunk, destroying schools property and being anti everything established you want to punish a couple and their friends on Prom Night. I hope you school produces a lot of proctologists and I am sure scholars like your selves know why. Let him do community service to make up for your foolish rules. I am certainly proud of him for his effort. By the way this isn't a race thing is it? I would hope not they seem nice together. DSK

I know that the Head Master will not read this but I have to say this...I did not get to attend my Senior Prom because I had extremely strict foster parents. Yes I am 49 now, but everytime I see teens in their prom gowns I am always reminded...What would it had been like to go to a prom. I lived those thoughts thru my sons experiences. Yes, I survived but the hurt is still there. With all the tragedies in the world could you not have a community service that he could do, to give back instead of taking away
Loida Jordan May 13, 2011 at 11:17 PM
Hero ??? Not really!!!, this this comment in top of mine, if probbably the DR. Smith herself, saying that she is a "hero" so she believe it alone. Your are not suppose to be a hero, punishing minors, for do sweet pranks, If you wanted to be a hero so badly, why you didn't go fight in Pakistan or help in the capturing of Bin Laden. Hero is not the word goes there, is FIRED.
Loida Jordan May 13, 2011 at 11:35 PM
"Sybil Adams", are you sure you are not Sylvia Bordet in Disguise? Because she definitely knows how to insult people that are more intelligent than her , and she gets very cranky when she can't get her ways. You are also e very manipulative person, always changing your name so you don't get in trouble. You are the idiot here. Your comment is the must stupid of all. Are you the one earasing or deleting my messages all the way? I don't care if I talk or not or if you earase mines or not, the message of James have been listened around the whole world , and the mayority is in James side. He will get his Prom, one way or the other with or with out you.

Hi! I really liked what you said here. It's nice to have a parent's opinion on this. I'm not a parent (yet), but I do tutor middle school and high school students. I feel like so many adults out there just don't get it when it comes to teenagers and it seems like you do. So soon we forget, right? What it was like to be that age. In between childhood and adulthood and all the fun, excitement and pure agony that goes along with that time in everyone's lives. Like you said, he didn't hurt anyone or damage property. He also willingly agreed to accept another form of punishment, i.e. he demonstrated just how responsible he truly is. Rules are meant to bent sometimes and this head mistress needs to realize that before this situation becomes a national news story. Whoops! Too late for that! =)

Is there anything you can do to help this situation? Being that you are a professional in the same field (principal/vice-principal), perhaps input from peers can make a difference. If more principals/vice principals give their opinion, maybe there would be changes.

Why didn't the kid just ask the girl.

I was curious to see what the Shelton Board of Education vote was on June 25th, 2008 to have Mrs. Beth Smith appointed as Headmaster. Trust me, it was definitely not a unanimous decision to have her elected. The voting was as follows: Mr. Eugene Kierce-NO ; Mr. Francis MacIlvain-NO ; Mr. James Orazietti-ABSTAIN ; Mr. Bernard Simons-ABSTAIN. The individuals who voted YES were as follows: Ms. Arlene Liscinsky, Tim Walsh, Thomas Minotti, Paula Ellis, Chairman Oppel. Paula Ellis made the motion to have Dr. Beth Smith appointed. The final vote was 5-2-2, and unfortunately, the motion was passed. Perhaps Dr. Smith should take a refresher course on the topics of forgiveness, compassion, and leadership. James Tate is wise beyond his years. In my opinion, it is obvious to me that he will go far in life and be a leader people can respect and relate to.

Not for anything, but as the former CEO of a well known company with thousands of employees, I never for a moment forgot that it was a privileged for me to have so many people willing to work for my company. I was grateful for their help each and every day. Yes, I had to steer the ship, but I always did so with a kind hand because a mentor long ago taught me the principle of being a "benevolent dictator". I think school officials need to learn this concept while doing a little soul searching. Oh, by the way, the mentor who taught me about being a benevolent dictator? My high school principal.
Brianna May 14, 2011 at 04:00 PM
Agreed.^ This head master bitch is ridiculous. She's now made a joke of the entire school. There will be no way for anyone to remember her except for, "Oh, the bitch who stopped that kid from going to prom?"
Brianna May 14, 2011 at 04:02 PM
Exactly. What about the kid who was suspended on March 31st for smoking weed, or the kid who got suspended on March 31st for pulling out a knife? Do they all get to go to prom?
Brianna May 14, 2011 at 04:19 PM
This woman has no understanding of what it's like to be a teen. THIS is why kids do not expect authority figures. This whole thing was blown out of proportion because of the "doctor" here and frankly, it's ridiculous. Let the kid go to prom, since the bitch is a laughing stock either way.
aloha mom May 14, 2011 at 05:13 PM
Hey All! There is a headline on AOL that James WILL BE ALLOWED to go to prom! This is breaking news but no details were given, just the headline on AOL. Hopefully its true. Someone or many must have put a lot of pressure on Beth Smith because the decision has been reversed. WAY TO GO PEOPLE! The peoples' voice had been heard! That is what is great about being in America~ what a great country ! Have fun at your prom James! This can be a blessing in disguise for James.... he may go into politics or law or may even become a principal :)

Gerick: This is by far the BEST response I have read in any comment section on any site on the internet. This young man does have character and he has guts and he has heart. He should write a book and I am willing to bet that this incident, handled correctly by him, will make him an outstanding person that we will be proud to know about.
