A Shelton firefighter was recognized by Mayor Mark A. Lauretti for his brave rescue during a house fire last month.

Firefighters are trained to rush into a blaze when everyone else is struggling to get out. Such was the case on Jan. 23, when Cherylyn Lee's home on Hiawatha Trail was engulfed in flames. White Hills was quick to arrive on scene, and Lee was pulled from the house by Second Lieutenant Charles "Chauch" Ovesny.

At last night's Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Mark A. Lauretti honored Ovesny, saying "acts that benefit the fellow man" are what keep a community together.

"I read the email that one of the relatives had sent you with respect to that night, and he talked about the things that were important in life, and the fact that they had lost all the material things...but more importantly what was preserved was a person's life. And at the end of the day, that's really what it's all about," Lauretti said as he addressed Ovesny and the friends and family that gathered at the meeting.
