Should You Be Required to Buckle Up in the Back Seat?

The proposal was rejected for several reasons, including possible civil liberties issues raised by the bill, legislators said.

A bill that would have required everyone in the back seat of a car to buckle up died Wednesday in a General Assembly committee, according to the News Times.

Under state law now, all front-seat passengers must wear restraints, but in the back seat, only passengers 16 and under must wear safety belts.

The American Automobile Association of Southern New England had been in favor of the bill.

The Transportation Committee, chaired by Rep. Antonio Guerrera, D-Rocky Hill, and Sen. Andrew M. Maynard, D-Stonington, killed the bill.
