Shelton Zoners Want Moratorium on Medical Marijuana

Potential medical marijuana growers and sellers may have to wait longer if they want to do business in Shelton.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a 7 p.m. public hearing Aug. 28 in City Hall on a "[nine-month] moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries and procedures."

The state's proposed medical marijuana law, on the site of the state Department of Consumer Protection, is 76 pages long. Other questions about medical marijuana can be answered here.

Zoning Administrator Rick Schultz said as far as he knows, Shelton may be the only one seeking a moratorium. Communities can seek a moratorium lasting as long as a year, but Shelton Zoning officials felt six months was too short and a year too long.

The problem is that "towns are acting on this without the [state] regulations in place," Schultz said.

Also, there are only a few slots for medical marijuana businesses in Connecticut, he added.
