Shelton Gets a Slightly Lower Tax Rate

Shelton's new tax rate will be 22.31 mils, or $22.31 per $1,000 of assessed home value.

Assessed value is 70 percent of market value.

The amount is a slight reduction that won the praise of Mayor Mark A. Lauretti and Board of Alderman President John Anglace.

The revised budget also adds funding to the school district.

"Once again, we have demonstrated the ability to work together in the best interest of Shelton's citizens/taxpayers and have arrived at a spending and taxation plan that will manage our city well and give our citizens one of the most affordable tax rates in Connecticut," Anglace said.

"We have weathered the economic malaise while continuing to provide outstanding public service and instilling confidence in the business community which fuels much of our needed revenue flow," he added.

Items such as garbage and recycling systems, public safety upgrades, road improvements and debt service are being handled without impacting the taxes, according to Anglace.

Lauretti said a low, stable tax rate promotes growth in jobs and consumer spending.

"If you do not have your financial health, you are not good to anyone. I think that is what our government loses sight of sometimes," Lauretti said. "It is nice to give out free things and it is nice to want to be able to help people who need help. That is the American way but if you do not have your financial health, you are no good to anyone."
