City of Shelton to Introduce Single Stream Recycling

Shelton will reportedly save about $500,000 a year by switching over to the new single stream recycling program.

Following the lead of other area towns, the is gearing up to introduce single stream .

According to a report in the Valley Independent Sentinel, the City will save about $500,000 a year by to the new single stream program.

Mayor Mark Lauretti said the recyclables picked up via the city collection program will now be sold, thus creating a revenue stream while at the same time reducing the amount of garbage waste to be carted and disposed of.

The program, slated to be rolled out Sept. 1, will also result in more household waste being recycled. The City will continue to pick up garbage and on the same schedule, according to the report, however residents will be allowed to recycle up to 80 percent of their household waste, without having to sort it, by using new garbage-can-style recycling bins that will be provided.
