A 46-year-old motorist from Meriden struck a letter carrier with his Ford van in New Canaan Tuesday afternoon as he was bent down placing mail from his bag into mailboxes, police said.
The victim, a 52-year-old Shelton man, stayed at the scene near 116 East Ave. following the accident, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.
“Upon arrival officers found a postal worker on the ground complaining of pain to his back and foot,” Ogrinc said in a press release. New Canaan paramedics transported him to a hospital, she said.
The accident occurred in a semi-circular driveway on private property, and emergency responders no enforcement action, Ogrinc said.
“The vehicle, a Ford Van, was in the process of exiting the driveway and negotiating a left curve within the driveway when the vehicle’s passenger side struck the postal worker,” Ogrinc said. “At the time of impact the postal worker was bent down placing mail from his bag into mailboxes.”
