Seatbelt Checkpoints To Be Held May 23 - June 5

The following information comes from a press release by Lt. Robert Kozlowsky of the Shelton Police Dept.

In a combined effort to help save lives, the , Derby, and Seymour Police Departments have teamed up to participate in the "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement campaign from May 23rd through June 5th. Seat belt checkpoints will be set up during the day and evening hours throughout various locations in Shelton, Derby, and Seymour to crack down on safety belt violators. The intent of this enforcement effort is to remind motorists to always use good roadway safety sense. Motorists should always buckle up and obey all traffic laws.

Last November during "Click It or Ticket", the Valley departments issued 314 infractions for seat belt violations along with five other violation tickets. This time we will also target motorists who are talking or texting while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 60 percent of people between the ages of 21 to 24 years old were not wearing their safety belt when they were involved in a traffic accident. Research has found that lap/shoulder safety belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury for a front-seat passenger by 45 percent. When crash victims are unbuckled their medical costs are on average 50 percent higher than those who are securely buckled.
