Neighborhood Cowboy Fires Gun in Air; Man Threatens Suicide Over Crushing Burden of Debt

Unusual arrests and incidents from around Fairfield County. Arrest information does not indicate a conviction.

A Trumbull man allegedly fired a 9mm handgun into the air four times in his Shawnee Road home earlier this week.

No one was injured.

Police were speaking to his neighbor when they heard the shots fired. He is charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, interfering with an officer, second-degree breach of the peace and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Westport Police arrested a 29-year-old Shelton woman Sept. 25 after she submitted to a breath test with the following results: .313 and .287. There were reports that a red Honda CRV traveling southbound on the Merritt Parkway was weaving in and out of traffic and cut off several vehicles. The Honda got off exit 42 southbound in Westport and witnesses continued to follow it until it parked in a parking lot on Avery Place. The driver appeared confused and incoherent. Officers could smell alcohol emanating from the vehicle, so the driver was asked to perform the field sobriety tests.

An unidentified Stamford male was charged with resisting an officer following an incident where he threatened to commit suicide, and then fought police when they attempted to stop him.

"Officers responded to a report of a male threatening to commit suicide," SPD's Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said. "On the way there, they received information that the man was having a conversation with a customer service representative at a major credit card company.

"He told the customer service rep that he'd slit his throat," Shawinsky said. "It was regarding a bill that the company claimed he hadn't paid. He claimed that the bill was paid, and to stop bothering him."

Police intervened, but the man fought police as they attempted to take him to Stamford Hospital for evaluation. When they finally subdued him and escorted him to the hospital, he was served with a Promise To Appear.

On Tuesday, a 41-year-old Norwalk man was arrested on an accusation he committed  against the 22-year-old woman who had visited him after breaking up with him.

Police gave the following account: She visited his apartment after she got off work late at night at a bar in Stamford. When she wanted to leave at 4 a.m., he became angry and dragged her back into the apartment by her hair, then locked her inside and punched, slapped, bit and choked her. She escaped and tried to get her belongings out of his car, but he pushed her in and activated the child locking device. She was able to get out again and run off, but he followed her in his car, crashing it and tearing the front bumper off. She ran into a store, where he again beat her. Someone else at that point called police, and he was arrested.

On Thursday, a Norwalk man was arrested on attempted murder charges after his girlfriend was seen  following what police said was his attack on her with a knife. He allegedly told police he was angry with her for physically abusing her children.

On Sunday, Sept. 25, Norwalk Hospital emergency department staff called in police when a baby was brought in  and with a skull fracture, a bone fracture in her arm and seven fractured ribs, police said. The commander of the police Youth Bureau said the case was the worst he'd seen in 23 years on the force. The 5-month-old girl's mother was arrested on a warrant on Thursday.
