Man in Jan. 22 Downtown Fire Dies

The unidentified man pulled from a burning basement apartment at 593 Howe Ave. Wednesday evening has died.

Bridgeport Hospital Spokesman John Cappiello said the man died early Thursday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire Marshal James Tortora was not immediately available for comment.

But four other people from the top floor apartment were escorted from the home to safety by Shelton Firefighter Chris Jones, who spotted the blaze after it started about 5 p.m.

Jones said he was exiting the Boys & Girls Club when he heard smoke alarms going off. When he neared the house, "I saw the orange glow inside."

He knocked on the basement apartment door but got no answer, so he ran to the next floor and assisted the four residents, two parents and two girls, out of the building.

"The fire was in the rear of the building," Jones said.

It was the first Downtown fire since about 20 apartments and several stores burned down early Jan. 6. There were injuries but no fatalities in that fire.
