Obituary: Mildred M. Johnson, Age 104

A memorial service is planned for early May at the United Methodist Church.

Mildred M. Johnson of Shelton, CT, died peacefully in her sleep Dec. 18, 2012. She was 104 years old.

Mildred, known to many as “Aunt Milly”, was born in Stafsigne, Sweden, on May 7, 1908, and emigrated to the US with her mother and younger brother Ted in 1912. They joined the father in Washington DC where she attended public school. The young family, with the addition of sister Florence, moved to the John S. Phipps estate in Old Westbury in 1920, where her father was employed as a chauffeur. She attended Westbury public schools, after which she enrolled in Brown’s Business School and obtained her diploma in Secretarial Studies in 1928.

In 1933, Mildred was employed by the Title Guarantee and Trust Company of Jamaica, NY as a legal clerk. She worked for them for 20 years before voluntarily leaving and obtaining a similar job with the private law firm of Lampke and Stein, later First Federal Savings and Loan, who then employed Mildred until her retirement in 1973.

Mildred enjoyed traveling, visiting most of the US, including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada, and Sweden. She was a very generous soul devoting her life toward helping others.

Mildred was very active in the United Methodist Church serving on local and regional committees. She was a long time Sunday school teacher and sang in the choirs of her churches in Westbury, NY, Woodhaven, NY, and Shelton CT.

She is survived by a brother, Carl E. Johnson of Waltham, ME, 4 nieces, Suzanne Bennett Johnson of Tallahassee, Fl, Carol Weiss of Skillman, NJ, Gloria Knight of Raleigh, NC, and Alice McAteer of Brentwood, NY, 3 nephews, Carl N. Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA, Peter L. Johnson of Gainesville, FL, and Charles McAteer of Port Jefferson Station NY, and many grand nieces and nephews, as well as many great grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for early May at the United Methodist Church, in Shelton CT. Following the service, burial of her ashes will be held at Friends Cemetery in Westbury NY.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in her honor should be sent to the United Methodist Church, 188 Rocky Rest Road, Shelton, CT. 06484. The Riverview Funeral Home in Shelton has been entrusted with her funeral arrangements.
