The Do's and Dont's of Super Bowl Sunday

Tips & tricks for surviving the big game.

1.  Don’t alienate everyone – You know the kind of person I’m talking about. That one person who is super into the game, screams if anyone dares to make a peep while the game is on, jumps halfway to the ceiling in joy or anger if anything happens, etc. No one likes to be around THAT person while watching the game (or anything else, really). Don’t be that person; you might be having fun but it’s unlikely anyone with you is enjoying the game quite as much. There’s nothing wrong with being THAT person if everyone else watching the game is also THAT person. But generally speaking, try to contain yourself just a little bit.

2.  Do use what you’ve got – If you weren’t going to buy that new TV or couch or whatever, don’t buy it.  People buy new TVs and couches all the time to watch the Super Bowl and/or to accommodate their guests.  This is great for the stores who sell the furniture and TVs but it still doesn’t make a ton of sense.  If the Super Bowl was being skipped this year (I know that doesn’t happen, relax, it’s hypothetical) would the new stuff still be purchased?  If the answer is no maybe you should reconsider dropping the cash on a 52” screen TV or whatever you’re upgrading to.  No one will mind having to watch the game on a diminutive 42” screen, or sitting on chairs that you’ve pulled out just for the game.  The Super Bowl is a BIG DEAL to a lot of people for reasons I cannot quite work out, but it’s also just a football game.  There’s no need to buy new toys for it, unless you were going to get them anyway.

3.  Don’t feel obligated – Not a football fan?  Don’t really want to watch the game but feel like should just because everyone else is but would rather do something else?  Yeah, don’t worry you’re not alone.   If football isn’t your thing, don’t force yourself to watch the game because everyone else is.  Find some friends who aren’t interested either and have your own viewing party for something you’re actually interested in.  Watch the Puppy Bowl, have a movie marathon, go out somewhere; just because it’s the Super Bowl doesn’t mean you have to watch it.

4.  Get involved – For whatever reason, you’ve chosen to watch the game even though you don’t normally watch football or understand it very much.  If this is you, try to get invested in the game somehow.  Pick a team to root for, for whatever reason you want to no matter how silly it might be.  Maybe you like one team’s mascot over another’s, or maybe one team’s uniforms have better colors, or perhaps you want to cheer for the team everyone else is cheering for.  Ask how football works before the game starts and don’t be afraid to ask questions while the game is on.  Just maybe try waiting a few minutes if something seemingly significant is happening (even if you don’t quite know what’s going on).  It’s likely you’ll have much more fun watching the game when you are actually invested in it.
