Summer is Fashion’s Playground

Tips for accessorizing throughout the summer from a Westport jeweler.

Summertime has a funny way of sending all the rules flying out the window, trading buttoned up style for an easier, breezier aesthetic. The only real rule I have for summertime accessorizing is: have fun!

With that in mind, I like to use just a few guidelines when it comes to helping my customers put together their summer look.

Mix it up – Don’t be afraid to wear your costume jewelry with some fine jewelry pieces in the summertime. I see so many women who are hesitant to mix the two, but sometimes you have certain costume jewelry pieces that just make you feel good. There’s no reason to banish them. Layer a long gold necklace with a colorful pendant on top of a strand of bright beads for a look that gives a nod to beachy, boho chic.

Get the blues—Turquoise is such a fun stone. For me, that vibrant blue evokes islands, beaches and sun—and the simpler, more contented lifestyle that goes with them. I just never get tired of turquoise. And it looks just as beautiful against sterling silver as it does against gold. Use bigger, bolder turquoise pieces as a statement centerpiece for your accessorizing. Or sprinkle it through several pieces—earrings, bracelets and rings—for a more eclectic look.

Hold the heavy metal – I admit, I am not a huge fan of mixing metals, despite the fact that this look has gained some traction in recent seasons. If you’re determined to blend, I recommend keeping your proportions equal. Throw together some silver and gold bangles on the same wrist and—voila!—you have a mixed metal look that is at once deliberate and playful.

Make a statement – Equally gorgeous for summer is the simple, paired down look of a truly eye-catching statement piece. Whether it’s a summery turquoise pendant, a bold cocktail ring, or a pair of dramatic earrings, highlighting a single piece can evoke the effortless ease of summertime. Just make sure that you focus on one thing, and limit any additional pieces to a cast of supporting characters.
