When it Rains, it Certainly Pours

Another storm system set to bring us another round of heavy rain and flooding issues.

Last year around this time, portions of eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern Massachusetts saw some of the worst flooding they have seen in the past 50 years. This year, it looks like the floodwaters have sloshed to the western side of the state.

This past weekend, heavy rainfall brought many rivers and creeks over their banks and into the homes of those who live near them. (See pictures for the full effect!) Thankfully, the waters have receded, for the time being. Another storm is looming, and this one is likely to bring ample moisture to our region.

A potent low pressure system will form over the southern Plains today and lift northeastward through the Midwest, bringing a mixed bag of rain and snow to that area. For us, it will be an all rain event as a secondary low develops over the Carolinas and tracks up the eastern seaboard, taking a track up the Hudson River. The proximity of the low will bring a repeat of the raw, rainy mess we experienced this past Sunday into Monday.

Precipitation develops during the early morning hours Thursday, and there might be some pockets of snow and sleet mixed in at the onset. It all changes over to rain pretty quickly, however, and continues throughout the day Thursday, and it could come down hard at times. By the time the rain tapers off Friday afternoon, rainfall totals will range from an inch in eastern sections to up to three inches in western sections. Widespread flooding is a concern once again, especially for western portions that were hit hard by the flooding earlier this week.

Coastal flooding is a concern with this system especially for the western end of Long Island Sound. Storms tracking to our west, as this one will, typically bring easterly winds to the region. These winds will cause the water to “pile” into the western end of the Sound, and this tends to cause some minor coastal flooding in western end of the Sound.

Predominantly fair weather will be the rule for this weekend. The exception to the rule will be a weak Clipper system that scoots across the area Saturday night with the chance of some light rain and snow showers. Daytime high temperatures will reach into the mid-40s and lows averaging around 30.
