Letter to the Editor: September 11 Tribute Poem

On the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Daniel Salemme submitted this September 11 remembrance poem.

Here is a 9/11 remembrance and tribute poem I wrote last year called "Here We Are". I'm including the poem and the link to the poem. Thanks.

Here We Are

Here we are, a country
A toll of fear and grief.
Uncertain, save for feelings
Doused deep in disbelief.

Here we are, a people
The lot of lost and lone.
Some hugged the families found
Some parted through the phone.

Here we are, some faithless faces
Divided by the storm.
Angered rallies, trustless creeds
Unite a doubtful horde.

Here we are, a decade later
The weight not lessened still.
The weight of heartened strength to calm
The wait for voids to fill.

Here we are, united.
Some tease and call it trite.
Though choosing to salute or not
Is your basic human right.

Here we are, a victim
We haven’t any voice.
We haven’t time to say goodbye
We never had the choice.

Here we are, some stranger
We didn’t know you then.
We didn’t know you now, but still
We think of you again.

Here we are, repairing
Persevering at a cost.
Here we are, a decade since it’s happened
Here’s to the lost.
