41 Percent of Shelton without Power

Fifty percent of Shelton is still without power as residents recover from Hurrican Irene. Fortunately, Shelton was not hit hard, with power outages and street debris being the biggest of problems for most people.

According to United Illuminating Company, 8,736 of 17,452 customers currently do not have electricity. Though UI trucks can be seen around town today, it could be another day or two before full power is restored.

An emergency shelter has been set up at located at 120 Meadow Street for residents who wish to evacuate their homes.

There are a few road closures as cleanup crews clear away downed trees and branches. Beginning at the Huntington Green, access onto Ripton Road is prohibited. Waverly Road is also blocked off from Walnut Tree Hill Road to Huntington Center.

Volunteers for the Shelton Dog Park are reporting that the area was not damaged and lots of people are coming with their pets. The Trails Committee, however, is asking for help in cleaning up the recreational paths. They posted the following message on their Facebook page:

"HELP NEEDED! We have over 15 miles of trails in Shelton that are a complete disaster. There is no way the small Trails Committee crew is going to be able to clear all the trails any time soon. So we're asking people to help clear out the trails, even if it's just picking up sticks along a favorite trail. Lots of trees will need to be cut with chainsaws, too."
