The City of Shelton has been awarded $14,710 under Iroquois' Community Grant Program to complete construction of the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path.

The City of Shelton has been awarded $14,710 under Iroquois' Community Grant Program to complete construction of the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path.

The Rec Path is a multi-use, handicapped-accessible trail that begins near downtown Shelton at Pine Lake and ends near Huntington Center at Lane Street. The scenic four-mile route is complete except for a central half-mile section, requiring trail users to detour onto Oak Valley Road.

The City intends to use staff to clear and grade the trail and then hire a contractor to install a crushed stone surface coat that is eight feet in width.

The Conservation Commission's goal is to have the entire Rec Path complete by National Trails Day, which is June 2, 2012.

The Recreation Path crosses over the Iroquois pipeline only 100 feet from the new section that will be constructed in 2012. This is the second Iroquois grant awarded to build the Rec Path. In 2006, the Shelton Land Conservation Trust used an Iroquois grant to pay for supplies to build a 11-foot long boardwalk near Lane Street and also to construct a portion of the Rec Path along the Land Trust's nearby meadow.

This is twelfth grant awarded for Rec Path construction over ten years, bringing the total amount of grants received to $409,439. The City of Shelton has contributed $191,600 as well as City staff when available, and volunteers have contributed significantly over the years to keep costs substantially below that of a typical multiuse path.
