A Last Fish Supper Before Good Friday

Two fish fries are scheduled this Friday night, one at United Methodist Church of Shelton and another at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Christians avoiding meat on Fridays during Lent can enjoy one more night of fish fries in Shelton. First United Methodist Church of Shelton and St. Joseph Catholic School are hosting fish dinners tonight — and both will have takeout.

"I think we have real good quality food," The Rev. Heather Sinclair of First United Methodist Church said Thursday. "We would offer a really good meal and I think it's a fun family atmosphere. It is the last chance until next year."

First United, 188 Rocky Rest Road, has already held five fish frys this year, attracting over 100 people every night with the exception of one March snowstorm.

"We had up to 150 people a few of the nights," The Rev. Sinclair said.

This is the 11th year of the fundraiser, which raises money for the church's ministry and mission. This Friday's event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Dinner costs $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and kids younger than 14 eat for free. Meals include a choice of fried or baked fish, french or sweet potato fries, baked sweet or white potatoes, coleslaw, fresh baked desserts and beverages. For family members who don't like fish, The Rev. Sinclair says there is pasta.

"We cook everything here," she said.

Dessert has included pies, cakes and last week there was ice cream. "Lemon meringue pie is our most popular," The Rev. Sinclair said.

Both the St. Joseph Catholic School and First United Methodist Church of Shelton's fish fries are open to all.

"We just open the doors to the community and hopefully they'll come see what we’re like as a church and that we're a strong, faithful community," The Rev. Sinclair said.
