Fallen Trees Cause Power Outages and Traffic Problems

A fallen tree on Chestnut Street knocks out power; a tree down on Long Hill Avenue blocks traffic.

Bob Smarz woke up Sunday morning to find that Hurricane Irene had uprooted a large tree on Chestnut Street and knocked out his electrical power.

The tree took down the power cables near is house and snapped utility poles all the way down the street.

Smarz said the tree came down at 4:30 a.m., according to the clock on his answering machine that lost power at that time.

He said all he could do was wait for utility company workers to come and repair the downed wires.

Shelton Parks Department workers arrived around 2 p.m. Sunday to clear the branches and open up the road.
