Fairfield, New Haven Counties Rank Low in Pollution Report

Litchfield and Hartford counties, however, received passing grades, according to the Connecticut Post.

The American Lung Association's State of the Air 2012 report has ranked Fairfield County as the 24th most polluted county in the country, according to the Connecticut Post.

The report, which was released on Wednesday, gave the county an "F" for ozone pollution and a "C" in particle pollution based on Environmental Protection Agency data collected between 2008 and 2010. On the other hand, the county had fewer poor air quality days and pollution days compared to last year.

Litchfield and Hartford counties, which both received failing grades in last year's report, saw an improvement in 2012. Litchfield received a "C" and an "A" in ozone and particle pollution, respectively.

New Haven County, however, didn't fare as well in ozone and particle pollution. It received an "F" and a "D", respectively, although it did have fewer poor air quality days than Fairfield County.

The United Health Foundation ranked Connecticut #3 on its late last year due low smoking and obesity rates, but did point out the state's moderate rate of air pollution and "high prevalence of binge drinking."
