Conservation Commission Talks Disc Golf In Shelton

Adam Goodman begins talks with Shelton committees about building a disc golf course.

Shelton could be the next city in Connecticut to put in a disc golf course and join the 17 other courses across the state.

Shelton’s Conservation Commission opened their monthly meeting last night with a presentation by Adam Goodman, an environmental consultant and professional disc golf player, who wants to design and build a disc golf course in Shelton.

Disc golf is similar in nature to normal golf, though the courses are significantly smaller because the game involves throwing specially made discs into a steel basket 200-1000 feet away.

Disc golf tournaments in the area generally draw between 60-90 people to the entirely volunteer-run events, according to Goodman.

Goodman designed and built the courses in New Canaan and Bridgeport’s Veteran’s Park, which has helped to revitalize Veteran’s Park, according to John DeRosa, who helped Goodman push for the course to be built.

“I hate playing a course that’s poorly designed,” said Goodman, “so if there’s a course going in near me, I want to have a part in it.”

Goodman also explained that disc golf courses are inherently low-impact on their environments and have almost no maintenance that needs to be performed to keep them running.

The proposal was generally well received by the Commission.

“Do it right,” said Commissioner Jim Tate. “Make it a top-shelf course.”

Goodman will now talk with Shelton’s Parks and Recreation department, as well as scout out areas around Shelton with Vice-chairman Bill Dyer.

The commission also discussed plans to conduct a guided wildflower hike in Birchbank Park on April 17th. More information will be available at www.sheltontrailscom.blogspot.com as the date approaches.
