Changes in the Offing

Some snow and cold this week, then some moderation to warm the heart next week.

After a nice relatively warm weekend (and a busted Saturday forecast on my part), the weather will once again snap us back to a winter reality. Low pressure will develop south of us and track northeastward, well to our southeast. This storm will bring us a light accumulation; the storm's track will keep the heavier stuff to our south, over the fishes.

Precipitation breaks out after 9 tonight, possibly starting as rain in may locations in southeastern CT and along the coast. Inland, snow may mix at times with sleet. Light snow continues overnight before ending early tomorrow morning, around 9 AM. Accumulations will be light with this one, on the order of  an inch in coastal sections and 2-4 inches north and west.  I would not be surprised is somebody in the northwest corner reported  a little more,  but that will be the exception rather than the rule.

As I said earlier, we are about to snap back to the reality that we are in the middle of winter.  An Arctic airmass will overcome the region in the wake of this little system, and we will begin to feel its effects tomorrow afternoon. It will become very windy, and temperatures will begin to plummet during the afternoon as bitterly cold returns on northwest winds. Snow squalls will abound tomorrow evening as any leftover moisture gets wrung out of the atmosphere by the drier and colder airmass working in.
Look for highs over the next couple days to struggle to reach out of the 20s though the remainder of the week, and lows will dip into the single digits in many locations.  The icy grip will be loosened as temperatures begin to moderate by the weekend, with highs reaching mid 30s.

There has been talk of a significant storm affecting us towards the end of the week ,however right now this storm looks like it will be a "fish storm", developing well east of us, out over the ocean. For us?  Maybe some flurries. The next legitimate chance of a storm looks to be Sunday into Monday - maybe some heartbreak on Valentine's Day? Too early to tell on that one.

All good things must come to an end, and indeed it looks as if this cold and stormy pattern will be relaxing for at least a few days next week, allowing for more seasonable temperatures and a respite from the brutality of the past few weeks. But remember, winter is not far for long, and I suspect Mother Nature has more wintry fun in store for as we continue through February.
