First Aid Classes Keep Pets Safe

Red Cross Dog First Aid and CPR

Taking a pet first aid class could save your pet's life.  First Aid classes can help a dog owner recognize signs and symptoms that something could be wrong with your four legged family member.

Red Cross first aid classes are a combination of lecture, discussion, video, and hands on demonstration.  Topics include actions to take in an emergency, such as CPR and controlling bleeding.

Class participants learn how to perform CPR and rescue breathing on a stuffed dog modified to simulate lungs and airways by breathing into a tube on dogs mouth. The dogs chest contracts and expands when practicing rescue breathing.

Real dogs aren't so cooperative and there are risks of injury performing CPR on a live dog.  The dog mannequin is also used to practice making emergency muzzles out of cloth strips.  Muzzles are necessary for human safety when an animal is in pain.  Always remember even your own dog can bite you if injured and in pain.   This course also covers what to do if your dog is choking and what to do if your dog has gotten into something poisonous.

The biggest benefit to this class is that it makes dog owners feel better prepared in case of an emergency.  This is a great class for anyone who works with dogs.
