Start gathering your tattered and worn flags.

You can retire them Sept. 29 at the American Legion Post 16, 295 Bridgeport Ave., at 2 p.m.

Flags are traditionally retired by burning them. Trumbull recently burned hundreds of flags for its ceremony.

According to Mike Kellett, flags may be dropped off at the American Legion in a flag deposit box under the front canopy.

"Members of Post as well as area Boy and Girl Scouts will take part in the ceremony. Scouts from each unit will be part of the flag retirement detail as well as two Girl Scouts reading the Poem “I am the Flag” and a Boy Scout leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance," according to the Legion's Post on Facebook.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and scout groups are encouraged to attend in uniform with their unit colors.
According to http://www.connecticutsar.org/education/flag-etiquette.htm, "the preferred method for retiring a flag is by burning in a dignified manner. Many local SAR, DAR, VFW, and other groups hold such ceremonies and will collect the flags being retired. Here is one version of the ceremony.
