Playground Program & Drive-In Movies For Shelton Kids

School's out for the summer! Parents, fear not. There are free activities right here in Shelton to keep the kiddies occupied.

No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks!

With the Shelton school year dwindling down, kids will soon be spilling outdoors looking for ways to fill their time, while parents will be equally as anxious to find fun but safe activities to send these little ones off to.

Fortunately, the city's Parks & Recreation Department and Youth Service Bureau are a step ahead of the game. In addition to being offered at the , a free playground program and free drive-in movies will be held during the hot months.

The 2011 Playground Season will start July 5 at 9:00 a.m. It is for Shelton residents only. The six playground locations are , , , , , and Pine Rock Park off Long Hill Avenue.

The playgrounds will be open each Monday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays through Friday from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. The program will run for six weeks beginning Tuesday, July 5 and end on Friday, August 12. Playgrounds will be closed on rainy days. Children spending the entire day should bring their lunches.

Registration at each playground will take place throughout opening week and is open for all children ages six to 14 years old. It is important that parents inform the Playground Supervisors of any medical history of their children that might require immediate or emergency attention, such as allergies to insect or bee stings.

Activity and field trip information will be posted to inform parents of the calendar of events for each week. Included in the field trips will be selected movies, roller-skating and miniature golf, bowling and Lazer Tag programs. Arts and crafts will be offered to each playground throughout the season. A small fee will be collected to cover cost of materials.

And when the sun goes down, head to the Riverwalk Veteran's Park on Canal Street for free "drive-in" movies! Showtime is on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own refreshments, seating and bug spray. Alcohol is not permitted. The schedule of movies is as follows:
