Groups to Boycott Starbucks Over Stances on Gay Rights, Guns

Separate boycotts criticize coffee chain's stances on national issues. What are your thoughts?

Some religious and political groups are urging Starbucks customers to grab their morning coffee elsewhere in light of the company's stance on gay marriage and its policy on guns.

USA Christian Ministries, a group boycotting Starbucks for its recent support of gay marriage in the state of Washington, said in a news release that the coffee chain's decision has angered Christians.

"Christians are upset with Starbucks for turning against God," Steven Andrew, president of USA Christian Ministries, said.

The group hopes that, with full support from Christians, Starbucks, which operates one location in Shelton, could lose up to 80 percent of its business.

Starbucks joined Microsoft and Nike in publicly supporting gay marriage in a statement last week, according to the Seattle Times. In its statement, Kalen Holmes, executive vice president for partner resources, said the Starbucks embraces diversity and provides an "inclusive, supportive and safe work environment" for its employees.

"This important legislation is aligned with Starbucks business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners," the statement read. "It is core to who we are and what we value as a company."

This isn't the first time the company has made headlines for taking a stance on gay marriage. In 2011, Starbucks was among a group of 70 business and organizations opposing the Defense of Marriage Act, CNN reported.

An unrelated Feb. 14 boycott is planned to protest the company's policy allowing customers with guns to be served.

The National Gun Victims Action Council, an anti-gun group, said in a Jan. 23 news release its goal is to "eliminate the risk of guns in public places and ultimately to bring sane gun laws to the U.S."

Would Starbucks' stance on gay marriage or its policy on guns affect your coffee habits? What do you think of the USA Christian Ministries boycott of the coffee giant? We want to hear from you. Leave your opinion in the comment section.

To begin with, I am not gay and a very happy married man. I support Starbucks decision for one MAIN reason. This is America, the land of equal rights and NO One should have the right to to tell another how to live their live. I personally think that religions are getting to involved in the lives of american citizens. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? I believe that the religion is a good thing but, enough is enough. Religous gropus should practice therir beliefs the way they believe and keep it to themselves, they don not have the right to push their beliefs on other people. Someone who is gay did not just decide to be gay, they were born with that traits in them because God must have wanted it this way. NOW, is the USA CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES going against Gods decision?

From the Shelton Patch Facebook page, John Szczesiul says: " 'If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen' If you want to push your agenda in peoples faces expect to be pushed back."

Everyone should stay out of eachother's face! What does any of this have to do with another? Answer, nothing! As a business entity free to utilize its right to free speech, Starbucks has done nothing wrong. Same goes for Christian Ministries. If they succeed in eliminating 80% of Starbuck's business, a delusional goal, than they've done nothing wrong. If Starbucks feels compelled to take a stance on gay rights, which has nothing to do with the coffee beverage service industry, then they should accept any consequences.

I found it rather odd that the authors of the article in the title made me think that there would be two topics evenly discussed and the gun issue was a by the way topic at the end. Second amendment rights folks! It doesn't matter how many stupid gun laws you enact, the criminals will get their guns either way because it's criminals who use guns to kill not responsible people who follow laws!!! Liberal Utopia is an impossibility!!!!!

Who is this Pastor Steven Andrew, and what exactly is USA Christian Ministries? I love it when these self-proclaimed leaders claim to speak for Christians. I'm a Christian with an anti-hate agenda.

So, pipe down, "Pastor" Steve.

Leave the Gays alone. Whether your religion does or doesn't accept them is no one's business but yours and decent liberal thinking people don't believe that anyone should have their rights limited because of who they are. If your church opposes Gay marriage then don't marry them in your church but if a gay couple wants to get married the should have te right lie everyone else to go to town hall get a license and be married by a justice of the peace (or an Elvis impersonator if we are in Las Vegas).

As for gun rights: ALL the writings of the framers of the constitution explicitly support the notion that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right. The supreme court under Heller vs. the District do Columbia came out in support of the individual right. Statstics have shown over and over again that gun control at any level has never, ever, made people safer or reduced crime. If I had the space I could go into a myriad of facts and figures to support this. Any claim by anti gun groups to the contrary have had their facts shown to be either deliberately misinterpreted to support their agenda or completely fabricated. We already have to pass tests, get licenses and prove tat we are not felons, drug addicts, or determined by a doctor and a court of law that we are not mentally handicapped in some way before being able to even handle a gun in a shop. Support you right to defend yourself and your family.

I'm not a coffee drinker, so have never been a customer of Starbucks. Their stand against DOMA and for ssm makes me very glad to not give them even $1!

If I had been their customer before, they would have lost me by taking these anti-child and anti traditional moral values stances. Imo businesses, and entertainers, should stick to the business they are in, and stay out of the social issues.

I will never go to concerts of singers who insult Conservatives and Republicans, and also avoid the movies of actors who proclaim their statist politics!

No one asked you to, you can live in your little bigots world with your same minded friends and save your $1.00 to contribute to your favorite tea party causes, no one wants or needs you or your money.
